Liberty City es un barrio del noroeste de Miami, en el condado de Miami-Dade, Florida, Estados Unidos, delimitado aproximadamente por la NW 79th Street al norte, la NW 27th Avenue al oeste, la Airport Expressway al sur y la Interstate 95 al este, y concentra una de las mayores comunidades afroamericanas del sur de Florida. Surgió en la década de 1930 como extensión segregada de la antigua “Colored Town” (Overtown), cuando las leyes de Jim Crow y los convenios restrictivos empujaron a la creciente población negra hacia el noroeste de la ciudad; en 1937 abrió Liberty Square, el primer proyecto de vivienda pública del sur del país destinado a residentes afroamericanos, impulsado por el New Deal de Franklin D. Roosevelt. Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial llegaron migrantes del sur de EE. UU. y de Bahamas, y la construcción de la I-95 desplazó a miles de familias de Overtown hacia el norte, consolidando a Liberty City como enclave negro de clase trabajadora y, con el tiempo, como zona de alta pobreza y tensiones; en 1968 hubo disturbios durante la convención republicana y en mayo de 1980 estalló una revuelta tras la absolución de los policías implicados en la muerte de Arthur McDuffie, con 18 fallecidos y más de 100 millones de dólares en daños. Demográficamente, estimaciones recientes sitúan la población entre 20 000 y 34 000 habitantes, con mayoría afroamericana (alrededor del 82 % según datos ACS 2011-2015), fuerte presencia caribeña (jamaicana y haitiana) y un porcentaje hispano en crecimiento; la renta media de los hogares ronda los 40 000 dólares y la tasa de pobreza supera el promedio del condado, mientras cifras locales de 2023 reportan una renta media de 40 964 dólares y un 69 % de viviendas ocupadas por inquilinos. Culturalmente, el barrio es cuna del Miami bass y de figuras como Luther Campbell (2 Live Crew), Trick Daddy, Trina y el jugador de la NBA Udonis Haslem, y alberga instituciones como el African Heritage Cultural Arts Center y el histórico Hampton House, además del parque Charles Hadley Park, epicentro de actividades comunitarias. A pesar de los desafíos de criminalidad y desigualdad, Liberty City mantiene una identidad vibrante que se expresa en murales, festivales como el desfile anual del MLK Day, su escena de hip-hop y la resiliencia de organizaciones vecinales que defienden la propiedad y la cultura negra frente a la gentrificación.
